Visiting some Oxford colleges

While breakfasting in our favourite cafe in the covered market, Linda noticed that it was some sort of Open Day in Oxford today and that some of the colleges were participating in this. I have been reviewing the various websites of Oxford colleges as part of the initial work on possibly applying to do a PhD there and have a small short list of candidates. Three of these are just round the back of the covered market - Exeter, Jesus and Lincoln - and the first of these was participating in today's event. So, for the first time ever, we have been for a look round an Oxford college (despite living close by for 15 years). And very nice too, as one might expect. The chapel, dining room and gardens were all very nice. I'm sure it would be quite a thrill to study somewhere like this - just as it is no doubt for Emma at Trinity. Afterwards we had a quick look round Balliol which we didn't think was as impressive!

PhD applications can be made anytime from about now so I do need to do something on it each week from now on, with a view of applying at the end of October or there abouts My most urgent task is to produce some more written work and to arrange times to discuss the matter with various people at LSE (where I will also apply). I have re-registered for the new academic year which, I am surprised to realise, is only three weeks away from starting. Must try and read something for Philosophy of Economics soon.

Balliol College from Broad Street - perhaps the most photographed college in Oxford?
