Two trips to Cambridge, Thoughts on PhDs . . . .

Not an ideal three days, it must be said.

The freezing weather continues. It is now several days since the temperature got about freezing during the day. Frost has been building up on the trees and I spent a little while on Saturday morning out taking some pictures. My favourites below.

I got really cold getting the car packed for the trip to Cambridge. Then, at 2:15 as we prepared to depart, we hit a snag with the car not starting. No luck getting a van that late on a Saturday, so we had to unpack and then Emma select sufficient stuff to pack into Linda's car - enough to last her till Monday when I could go across to Cambridge again with the rest of the stuff.
.
So we left by about 3:00, but have a pretty good journey. Unloading is awful as usual. Nearly 20 trips up the 3 flights of stairs to Emma's room. I am really out of shape at the moment and this is tough going. But Emma is able to unpack everything as I carry it up and then I can get going home by 6:30 or so.
.
I really ached the next day - in fact did not feel very well generally. So not much work done. I did read the Graduate Prospectus for Cambridge though, including the detailed report by the History of Science department. This is definitely my number one choice for a PhD. But I was struck by just how specialised the various current student's PhDs are - very different from the sort of stuff I am working on. So that was a bit of a shock and has given me something else to think about.
.
And then Monday I have to travel to Cambridge again with the rest of Emma's stuff. The Land Rover is fine again - apparently the battery needed replacing and luckily Linda was able to sort that out on Saturday.
.
So two days of work rather curtailed, and I don't feel at all well either. Not the best end to Emma's time at home.
